Why is a water meter shaft important

At first glance, a water meter shaft may seem like a technical detail, but in reality it affects the lifespan of the water meter and the entire water supply system.

A quality shaft provides protection for the water meter from freezing, flooding or mechanical damage and at the same time allows technicians easy access for reading or replacement without the need to dig.

A quality shaft is therefore not only a necessity from a regulatory perspective, but also a practical investment in the long-term trouble-free function of the domestic water supply.

What does a shaft consist of and how does it work

A water meter shaft forms a protected space in which the water meter and connecting fittings are placed. It consists of a body (most often plastic), an inlet cover and an internal system for mounting the water meter.

For shafts that are not intended to be buried to a frost-free depth, thermal insulation is an important part that protects the water meter from freezing. Last but not least, there is the sealing of penetrations that prevents water leakage.

How to choose a water meter shaft

A shaft is purchased for decades, so it is worth taking some time to choose. Focus mainly on these key parameters:

1. Material - plastic versus concrete

Plastic shafts (most often made of polyethylene) are light, durable and easy to install without the need for heavy equipment. Concrete shafts are very strong, but they are difficult to transport and handle. In practice, plastic shafts are therefore the most common in family houses, as they offer an ideal ratio of price, durability and easy installation.

2. Size and access

The shaft must be spacious enough for the water meter and fittings and allow convenient access for service work. Before purchasing, we recommend checking the required dimensions with the local water company, as they may differ.

The most common mistakes that you can easily avoid

In practice, situations occur that can significantly shorten the life of the shaft or cause damage to the water meter. These mistakes can be easily avoided:

  • Too shallow installation – if a shaft that is not specially adapted for this is placed above the frost-free depth, there is a risk of the water meter freezing. It is therefore necessary to either choose a shaft that is adapted to be placed above the frost-free depth and has sufficient thermal insulation. The alternative is a deeper tank that is installed at the frost-free depth and does not need thermal insulation. It is therefore necessary to ensure that the correct type of shaft is installed at the correct depth, which will save you expensive replacements.
  • Inappropriate location – the shaft should be easily accessible for technicians, but at the same time protected from loads (e.g. from vehicles).
  • Low quality of material – cheap and thin-walled plastics can crack over time. It is worth investing in high-quality design and a more robust construction right from the start.

Why choose a plastic water meter shaft

Modern plastic shafts are the most universal solution for most types of buildings. They are light, strong, waterproof and resistant to corrosion and chemicals. Installation is quick, usually manageable by yourself, and the material does not require any maintenance.

Thanks to its insulating properties and long service life, plastic has become the clear choice for the construction of family houses, cottages and smaller operations.
